Marketing Assistant

Starting date: flexible

Length: More than 2 months

Location: Beijing

Internship description:
For a successful and sustainable global bamboo industry, extensive and well managed bamboo forests are essential. However, it is not clear how much bamboo is available for use in the world. Therefore the company started cooperation with FAO, UNEP, the State Forestry Administration of China and many member countries to take stock, as part of FAO’s global Forestry Resources Assessment. In 2005 it and its partners organized two international training workshops. Bamboo inventories were made in 20 countries, using expert opinions or remote sensing or both. With the achievements, a report on the state of the global bamboo resources was published in 2007. Although important progress was made, the assessment was far from complete and provided only an approximation.

FAO is preparing for the global forest resources assessment 2010. In association, INBAR will again carry out the global bamboo resources assessment. To be able to do that effectively, we need to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the 2005 bamboo assessment and to make the necessary improvements.

We are looking for an intern to contribute to the preparation work of the bamboo resource assessment 2010. The intern should have a strong interest in forest resources assessment. The intern would work under the overall guidance the Director of Environmental Sustainability Programme and under the direct supervision of the Trade Development Officer. The intern will be asked to:

• Produce a literature review of updated information on the global bamboo resources;
• Analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the first global bamboo resources assessment (2005)
• Work with FAO forestry staff to make recommendations for improved resource assessment for participating countries
• Contribute to the organization of international workshops on bamboo resources assessment;
• Work with the team to prepare the workplan for the bamboo resources assessment 2010.

With this in mind, the intern would:
1. Help edit and finalise a range of publications for publishing online.
2. Help us evaluate and convert some of our old paper-publications into pdf files for publishing.
3. Help us develop a series of regional newsletters.
4. Help us develop a publishing strategy for, with links and networks that will enable us to produce more and better publications in the long term.
5. Help us produce multi-media publications.

Requirements:
Minimum bachelors degree in related subject, Masters preferred. Experience of producing similar reviews is also useful.
